The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Antique Gold-Plated Jewelry

The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Antique Gold-Plated Jewelry

Antique gold-plated and imitation jewelry is a beloved addition to any wardrobe, offering the grandeur of royal heirloom pieces without the premium price tag. However, because these pieces feature a layer of gold plated over brass or copper base alloys, they require thoughtful care to prevent tarnishing, discoloration, and wear. At Shrikaa, we craft our jewelry to last, but how you store and care for it at home plays a vital role in preserving its beauty. Here is your ultimate guide to caring for your imitation and gold-plated jewelry.

1. Keep it Dry and Chemical-Free

The number one enemy of gold-plated jewelry is moisture and chemicals. Water, sweat, perfumes, lotions, and hairsprays can trigger chemical reactions that tarnish the plating or cause it to wear off prematurely.

  • Apply perfume first: Always put on your makeup, perfume, and hairspray first, allowing them to dry completely before putting on your jewelry. Remember the golden rule: Your jewelry should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
  • Remove before activities: Never wear your gold-plated bangles or necklaces while swimming, bathing, washing dishes, or exercising. Chlorine, saltwater, soaps, and sweat are highly corrosive to jewelry finishes.

2. Clean with Care (No Harsh Chemicals)

Unlike solid gold or sterling silver, you should never use commercial chemical jewelry cleaners, alcohol, or abrasive soaps on gold-plated pieces. These harsh substances can strip the plating right off the base metal.

  • Wipe down after use: After wearing your jewelry, gently wipe each piece with a soft, clean microfiber cloth or a cotton ball. This removes skin oils and traces of sweat before storage.
  • Gentle deep clean: If your jewelry looks dull, mix a few drops of mild dish soap (without moisturizers or antibacterial agents) with warm water. Soak the jewelry for 2-3 minutes, gently wipe with a soft cloth, rinse in clean water, and dry completely with a clean towel. Ensure there is no moisture left before storing.

3. Separate and Organize for Storage

Allowing jewelry to rub against other metals is a common cause of scratches and tarnishing. Storing everything together in one drawer is a recipe for damaged jewelry.

  • Use airtight zip bags: Store your gold-plated bangles, especially jhumka bangles, in individual airtight plastic bags (like ziplock bags) with the air squeezed out. This prevents exposure to oxygen, which causes oxidation.
  • Velvet compartments: Place the individual bags inside a velvet-lined jewelry box or organizer. The soft lining prevents scratches if the bags move, and separate compartments ensure that metals of different types (such as rhodium and gold) do not touch.

4. Handle Kundan and Pearl Pieces with Extra Caution

Kundan and pearl jewelry require even more specialized care. Kundan settings involve placing stones in refined gold foil, and pearls are natural organic materials that are highly porous.

  • Do not submerge: Never submerge kundan jewelry in water, as water can get trapped behind the foil backing, causing it to darken or rot. Simply wipe the surface with a dry, soft cloth.
  • Breathable environment: Pearls need moisture from the air to keep from drying out and cracking. While you should keep gold-plated metals airtight, do not store natural pearl moti in completely sealed plastic bags for extended periods—velvet pouches are better.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your Shrikaa jewelry glowing, ensuring your favorite bangles and statement necklaces look as radiant as the day you first wore them!
